Since learning the importance of mental health, I have been working on artwork that reflects my childhood and adult relationships with my mother. The images depicted throughout my digital, print, and mixed media paintings reflect the most constant emotions. I aspire to connect with other Black women by expressing the feelings they may have experienced when their mothers sought to start a relationship with them as adults.
Within the artwork, it may be perceived that there is no relationship between the mother-daughter figures. Often, the eldest daughter is frequently viewed as the mother figure and caregiver. This creates an atmosphere in which the eldest sibling constantly compares the mother's level of affection, concern, and comprehension with that of a younger sibling. This is supported by Joyce E. Everet alt, Laverne D. Marks, and Jean F. Clarke-Mitchell’s qualitative study that examined how Black adult daughters perceived the influence of their mothers on the formation of their resilience, coping mechanism, and sense of self-worth.
